VCI presentations stand out at environmental competition

A group of Grade 12 biology students from Virden Collegiate Institute presented project proposals at Oak Hammock Marsh for the "Caring for Our Watersheds" competition.

Caring for Our Watersheds Competition is an environmental program that welcomes participation from students in Grades 7-12 across Manitoba.

A group of Grade 12 biology students from Virden Collegiate Institute presented their project proposals for consideration in the "Caring for Our Watersheds" competition.

Among the numerous submissions received, two proposals stood out and made their way into the top 10 projects in the province. One of these entries, led by  Finn Abel was titled "Beavers: Manitoba's Watershed Engineers," while the other, by Holly Lane and Avery Ramsey, was named "Accelerated Eutrophication in Oak Lake."

These proposals were crafted to tackle significant issues within their local watershed and were required to outline detailed project plans, including scope, budget, and timeline for successful execution.

Finn's proposal focused on utilizing log jams within the watershed to aid in water  retention, ensuring an adequate supply of water during drought periods in rivers and creeks.

On the other hand, Holly and Avery's proposal aimed to raise awareness to an important issue by installing educational signage at Oak Lake Beach, educating the public on the impact of eutrophication and ways to mitigate excessive algae growth due to phosphorus inputs.

As a result of their hard work and innovative ideas, Finn received a $300 prize, while Holly and Avery were awarded $350. The cash awards are to be used for their respective post-secondary education pursuits.

The judges are currently in the process of finalizing funding for project implementation, and soon it will be determined if these projects will be executed within the watershed. The commitment shown by these students towards enhancing the health of the watershed is a testament to their educational journey within the Fort La Bosse School Division, and we take pride in celebrating their achievements.
